When we bought our house we had a retaining wall built. |
All of the ferns you see just came along voluntarily. I think that was very nice of them. |
And every March I cut the ferns. All of the ferns. |
All of the way down to the bottom. |
March is the time to do it so the new little fronds (seen here) have not yet lifted their little heads. Therefore you do not cut off their little heads. |
One year I waited too long. It took forever to do the job because I had to be so careful not to cut the little fronds. |
I guess you could just cut off the old ugly leaves and leave the newer ones. |
But I just love how green and beautiful they look when they all come up |

The sunny days sure does make us all want to get out there and clean up our flower beds. Enjoy your spring!
Hugs! Florence
Your retaining wall looks beautiful! My ferns are still not cut back, nor are the roses pruned plus we have a man coming today to talk about moving a fence for a new veggie garden spot. Tis the season!
Annette, we have several retaining rock walls in our backyard that we built ourselves and they too, became full of voluntary ferns. I love them! Mother nature poking her green out wherever she can! Makes me smile. Happy day sweet friend! xoxo, Chris/Momma
It's lovely! We just redid the front garden with BIG rocks...I don't think I'll get volunteer ferns, but I'm hoping for some moss or lichens one day.
I love that wall you guys built.. Just beautiful .. I love it all. I bet when spring is in full bloom your place is just breath taking.. Love it all my friend
The looks great and I am sure it is going to serve a good purpose! I too cannot wait to plant some flowers things look a little dull in our yard right now. Hugs, Diane
that is so interesting. Because everything dies back here in the winter, I never gave it a thought.
I just get rid off all the dead leaves in the fall, and the new grows comes back automatically.
The wall looks lovely, and your ferns are very nice to help you out.
Love your picture Annette.
Sending you warm hugs from a snowy North-East....again!
